A fairy-tale on a plate, a sweet and swirling journey, a mythical morning indeed...
Many may not know of the Schneken, nor what it represents. A gift from the fairies of the Black Forest, crafted at dawn, and delivered to select and discrete bakeries around the world, the Schneken is the neglected and forgotten cousin of the cinnamon roll; and while the acceptance, exuberance, and elan of the general populace in support and pursuit of the cinnamon roll is well-known, that of the Schneken is not.
Perhaps it's the name, the necessity of difficult syllables so early in the morn', but truly is that an excuse? While a lack of wakefulness may excuse certain socially accepted and expected norms (such as allowing those who are grumpy to be grumpy due to not having their coffee fix as of yet) it should not excuse a neglect nor a lack of appreciation for this sweet little bun.
A challenge for you: Choose the neglected Schneken next time you see it sitting forlorn on the pastry shelf, and help gift the Black Forest fairies another day of purpose and joy. Avoid the boring, the accepted, the expected, the nauseatingly celebrated cinnamon roll in favor of the Schneken and enjoy the embodiment of a soft sunrise on your plate.
(With enough expressed interest - and background knowledge gained from the experience of indulging in the Schneken - the actual fairy tale, the creation myth, the essence of the Schneken will be shared in an upcoming post).
